The three-part limited series The Most Hated Man on the Internet comes out on Netflix on July 27, 2022. It tells the story of Hunter Moore, who started the website IsAnyoneUp.com.

It was a website that came out in 2010 and let people post naked pictures of women. Sometimes, personal information and social media handles of the people in the photos were also uploaded. It goes without saying that the site was upsetting and quickly became well-known.

Charlotte Laws is one of the women who sued Moore and the site after nude pictures of her daughter were posted. But there were many people who contributed to IsAnyoneUp.com’s failure. James McGibney was one of them. But who is he and why is he The Most Hated Man on the Internet?

Who Is James Mcgibney In The Most Hated Man On The Internet?

James McGibney is an entrepreneur who used to be in the Marines. He started a website called BullyVille.com and other sites.

The Radio Times says that after his time in the Marines, he started a company called SecuraTrak that uses satellites to track people. Then, in 2011, he set up CheaterVille.com, a website where people could anonymously post photos of people they thought were cheating. Often, stories went along with the pictures.

Wired says that he shut down the site, though, when he found out that some users were posting false and misleading information about women they liked or who turned them down.

As for BullyVille, it was started in 2012 with the goal of naming and shaming bullies and getting victims to share their stories so that they could find comfort and strength in being with other victims.

Hunter Moore And Isanyoneup.com

In the Netflix documentary, James talks about his meeting with Hunter Moore. He says that he was “appalled” by what he saw on IsAnyoneUp.

The Cinemaholic says that Mcgibney started advertising on the site to gain the trust of its founder. He thought that no one liked Moore, but no one was doing anything about it. Once he had won Moore’s trust, he asked if he could buy the website, and Moore agreed. McGibney helped Moore decide by telling him that it was only a matter of time before the site got him arrested.

The Radio Times says that McGibney bought the domain in April 2012 for “less than $15,000” and redirected it to BullyVille.

If you go to IsAnyoneUp right now, you will be sent to McGibney’s site, where he explains what he wants to do.

“I took over the disgusting revenge porn site www.isanyoneup.com and shut it down, but my work is not done,” he writes. “We’re making an online community to help people who have been bullied, followed, or harassed. Instead of asking for money, I’d like to invite you to join the team as an investor in AnyOneUp, Inc.”

Where Is James Mcgibney Now?

According to the Radio Times, McGibney and his company ViaView were ordered to pay one million dollars in 2015 as part of an Anti-SLAPP (strategic lawsuits against public participation) sanction. This came about after McGibney acquired the IsAnyoneUp domain. In addition to this, Neal Rauhauser was ordered to pay $300,000 in attorney’s fees to defend himself against the “baseless” claims that were made against him in the lawsuits.

In 2016, however, following a momentary and temporary reversal of the decision, the amount of the fine was reduced from $1 million to $150,000.

In 2018, an appeal was filed, which resulted in the sanctions being overturned. The court determined that the sanctions were unreasonable, and the case was eventually overturned.

In the year 2021, McGibney was ecstatic to announce that he had successfully earned a certification in cybersecurity from Harvard University. He is currently working toward obtaining a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Technology.

What Happened To Hunter Moore?

Moore entered a guilty plea in 2015 for the charges of aggravated identity theft as well as aiding and abetting in the unauthorized access to a computer system. He will serve a total of three years under supervision after his release from federal prison after serving two and a half years there.

In addition to that, he was ordered to pay a fine of $2,000 and make restitution in the amount of $145.70, and all of the data that was found on his seized computers had to be deleted.
