Sea of thieves captaincy: Sea of Thieves Season 7 finally has the long-awaited “Captaincy” feature, which gives players more control over their Ship and new ways to advance and get rewards. It’s a complicated new feature, so we made a handy walkthrough to explain everything!
In Sea of Thieves, players work together to run their own pirate ship, which is a very cooperative game. The latest update to the game, called “Captaincy,” is coming out at the same time as the seventh season of the online sandbox.
In Sea of Thieves, players keep their core stats the same and don’t buy upgrades. Instead, they use the gold they steal to make cosmetic changes to their characters. Dressing up your pirate is fun, but the Captaincy update goes a step further and lets you customize your ship, from the captain’s quarters to the nameplate.

A player can buy one of each type of ship. A sloop costs 250,000 gold pieces, a brigantine costs 375,000 gold pieces, and a galleon costs 500,000 gold pieces.
When you buy a ship, you can give it a name, put that name on the crest, and change how the captain’s quarters look. Pirates don’t have to go to the Shipwright every time they want to change the look of their ship.
Instead, they can save the changes to their ship. Your ship will look the same between sessions. If you’ve been in battles, you may have to pay the Shipwright a small fee to give it a new coat of paint.
Trinkets are a new type of cosmetic item that players can use to leave paintings and other small things around. Obviously, if you get into a sea battle, everything will get thrown around, so you’ll have to go back and carefully put everything back where it belongs. Ports are also a good place for captains to get planks, cannonballs, and other supplies that will make life on the seas easier.
Captains can also go on special trips called “Captain’s Voyages.” These trips have different lengths and mission goals, so players can plan their own quests and choose how long their trips will be.
Also, only Captains will be able to join the new Sovereign faction. Sovereigns hang out right next to the dock to buy your loot, which saves you a lot of time, especially if you’re being chased by Reaper players who want your Captain’s Log Book to sell to the Reaper’s Bones faction.
The seventh season also has a new plunder pass that lets players get rewards. There are also a lot of small changes, like new skins for musical instruments, stools that let you sit anywhere (which doesn’t really help the game, but is very nice), and new emotes and anglerfish skins in the Pirate Emporium shop.
What does the word “Captaincy” mean?
Players can now use in-game gold to buy their own ships and own them. This opens up new ways to level up, new ways to customize the ship, and even new benefits that are only available to players on a “Captained Ship.”
Become a “Captain” Sea of thieves
To start, you can purchase 1 of each type of ship for in-game gold:
- Sloop- 250,000 gold
- Brigantine- 375,000 gold
- Galleon- 500,000 gold
When you buy a ship, you must give it a name. You can use up to 20 characters, but you can’t use swear words or other words that aren’t allowed.
Once you’ve given your ship a name, you can’t change it for free.
To change the name of a ship, you have to buy a Ship Renaming Deed from the Pirate Emporium. This is like buying a Pirate Appearance Potion.
After choosing your ship, you can invite friends or join an open crew and set sail! Of course, the whole crew has to sail on one player’s ship, so you’ll have to agree on whose ship you’ll be on today.
