Primark (known as Penneys in the Republic of Ireland) is an Irish multinational fast fashion store with its headquarters in Dublin, Ireland. It is a part of Associated British Foods and has stores in the United States and all over Europe. The Penneys brand is only used in Ireland because American store J. C. Penney owns it everywhere else.
Arthur Ryan, who worked for the Weston family, who had started Associated British Foods in 1935, opened the company’s first store in Dublin in June 1969. It was called Penneys and is still open. After doing well in the Republic of Ireland, Penneys moved into Northern Ireland and opened a big store in the city center of Belfast in 1971.
In 1973, the company opened its first store outside of Ireland. It was in Derby, England.
The name “Penneys” was already taken by J. C. Penney, so the company couldn’t use it anywhere else in Europe besides Ireland. Then, for use outside of Ireland, the name “Primark” was made up.

Are Primark shutting down?
The company that owns Primark, Associated British Foods, has said that about 400 jobs will be lost in the UK stores of the clothing chain.
The store, which is owned by Associated British Foods, has started talking to its employees about plans to simplify the way it runs its stores in the UK.
It said that the goal of the change is to “make it clearer who is responsible, give workers more freedom, and give managers more help on the shop floor.”
As part of the move, it is creating a new management level role and getting rid of other roles. As a result, it expects to have about 400 less retail managers.
Primark has 191 stores in the UK with a total of 29,000 employees. The consultation is likely to happen in the next few months.
