Primark (known as Penneys in the Republic of Ireland) is an Irish multinational fast fashion store with its headquarters in Dublin, Ireland. It is a part of Associated British Foods and has stores in the United States and all over Europe. The Penneys brand is only used in Ireland because American store J. C. Penney owns it everywhere else.
Arthur Ryan, who worked for the Weston family, who had started Associated British Foods in 1935, opened the company’s first store in Dublin in June 1969. It was called Penneys and is still open. After doing well in the Republic of Ireland, Penneys moved into Northern Ireland and opened a big store in the city center of Belfast in 1971.
In 1973, the company opened its first store outside of Ireland. It was in Derby, England.
The name “Penneys” was already taken by J. C. Penney, so the company couldn’t use it anywhere else in Europe besides Ireland. Then, for use outside of Ireland, the name “Primark” was made up.
