President Murmu and Prime Minister Modi Express Their Grief Over the Coromandel Express Accident

A sense of grief and sorrow enveloped the nation as news broke of the devastating rail accident involving the Coromandel Express in Odisha.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Murmu expressed their condolences and promptly took action to address the situation. Over 50 people were feared dead, with more than 200 individuals sustaining injuries in the derailment near Balasore Bahanaga.

In a heartfelt tweet, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his distress and solidarity with the affected families. He conveyed his wishes for a speedy recovery for the injured and promptly contacted Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to assess the situation.

The Prime Minister assured that all necessary assistance would be provided to those impacted by the mishap. Similarly, President Murmu expressed his deep anguish over the loss of lives and extended his prayers for the success of rescue operations and the swift recovery of the injured.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also expressed his anguish, conveying his condolences to the bereaved families. He acknowledged the immediate response of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and other rescue teams, who swiftly arrived at the accident site to assist in the rescue operation.

Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw himself rushed to the accident site in Odisha. He expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and offered prayers for the speedy recovery of the injured. Vaishnaw emphasized that all necessary resources, including rescue teams from Bhubaneswar, Kolkata, NDRF, state government teams, and the Airforce, were being mobilized to ensure a comprehensive rescue operation.

Rahul Gandhi, expressing his anguish over the tragic incident, extended his support to the affected families and urged Congress workers and leaders to provide assistance in the ongoing rescue efforts.

Supervising the rescue operations was Sudhanshu Sarangi, the Chief of Odisha Fire Services. The medical colleges and hospitals in and around Balasore were put on high alert to handle the influx of casualties. Additionally, a specialized rescue team comprising 26 members equipped with advanced rescue equipment was deployed from the Odisha Fire and Disaster Response Academy in Bhubaneswar to provide aid at the accident site.

Chief Secretary Pradeep Jena of Odisha confirmed casualties in the incident, although an official count was still underway. The violent collision involved three trains, two passenger trains, and one goods train.

According to Railway Spokesperson Amitabh Sharma, the derailment occurred around 7 pm on Friday. Several coaches of the Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express derailed near Baleswar, crossing over to the opposite track. Subsequently, another train traveling from Yeswanthpur to Howrah collided with the derailed coaches, causing the derailment of additional coaches.

The NDRF promptly dispatched their first team of 22 members from Balasore Railway Station (BLS) to the accident site, with another team of 32 members from the Centralised Traffic Control (CTC) en route as well.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, understanding the gravity of the situation, directed State Minister Pramila Mallik and the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) to immediately reach the accident site. Both the minister and the SRC quickly headed towards the incident location, ensuring a coordinated response.
