Naughty Dog has announced that The Last of Us will be remade for the PlayStation 5 and PC. The new version, titled The Last of Us: Part I, will be released on September 9th on PS5 and later on PC.
Director Neil Druckmann announced the remake on a Summer Games Fest livestream, explaining that the character models and animation were redone to match the real-life performances of the game’s stars, Troy Baker (Joel) and Ashley Johnson (Ellie). The AI and assets of the game were also rebuilt from the ground up, making this a modern remake rather than a remaster of the PlayStation 4 original.
It will use 3D audio and the DualSense controller’s haptic feedback on the PS5. It looks visually similar to the 2020 sequel, The Last of Us Part II, which was one of the most critically acclaimed games of the year and sold over 10 million copies.
According to a Bloomberg report from April 2021, The Last of Us Part I was apparently born at Sony subsidiary Visual Arts Service Group before being handed back to Naughty Dog’s first-party developers due to a lack of resources.
