Before the movie comes out in the US, we talk about whether or not Nope is scary and break down the age rating and parents’ guide.
In Nope, a science fiction horror comedy written and directed by Jordan Peele, Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer, and Steven Yeun play people in a small town who see strange things happening in the sky that might be caused by aliens.
Is Nope Movie Scary?
Even though Nope is called a “science fiction comedy horror,” it doesn’t focus on the scary parts.
Slate said that while there are a few scary scenes and images, most of the movie is about the characters getting to know each other in a relatively safe setting.
The report also said that Nope was on the same level as Jurassic Park in terms of suspense and violence, and on the same level as Beetlejuice in terms of creepiness.
Nope’s Age Rating And Parents’ Guide Explored
Even though all of these things are true, Nope still has a R rating in the US but a 12A rating in the UK.
The harsher rating says that Nope has strong violence, hand-to-hand combat, scary, scary, and intense scenes, bloody content, profanity, and head injuries.
The Slate article also said that while there is some bloody content, Jordan Peele often shows the gore outside of the frame or in the dark.

Many horror movie fans and fans of Jordan Peele’s movies are asking people if they think Nope is scary as a way to warn other people not to watch it.
One writer said that Nope is not as scary as Peele’s last movie, Us, but it is still a “unsettling sci-fi thriller.”

When a new Jordan Peele movie comes out, it’s always a big deal. So far, all of his movies have been great, but there’s something special about going to the movies and not knowing what to expect.
No matter how many trailers you’ve seen, they only show a small part of what Peele is trying to tell. We weren’t ready for Get Out, and we weren’t ready for Us, either. Now, Peele is taking you on another ride you’ll never forget, but this one isn’t the scary movie you might be expecting. Instead, the director is going for a science fiction movie.
If the trailers are to be believed, Nope is about two siblings, OJ (Daniel Kaluuya) and Emerald Haywood (Keke Palmer), who try to record an unidentified flying object that seems to always be hovering over their house.
And while that story is a big part of Nope, the movie is also about the dark side of the entertainment industry, the people who have given up everything for it, and how the industry can eat them up, spit them out, and move on, which is not something that only happens in Hollywood.
As the last of a long line of horse trainers who supply their animals to Hollywood productions, OJ and Emerald are seeing the industry change around them as it becomes more efficient to use visual effects instead of real animals. Emerald is trying to branch out and make a name for herself, but OJ only cares about the family business that their late father left to him.

It’s impressive that Peele can tell these stories in layers in a scary science fiction movie. It’s also more proof that he can make any of his stories seem like they could happen to anyone, without making them too simple. Even better, he can do it in a movie that looks, feels, and sounds like a summer blockbuster instead of the kind of cerebral horror we’re used to. Us and Get Out did a great job as horror movies, but Nope is just bigger.
It has a lot of wide shots, great visual effects, a haunting score, and images that we haven’t seen from Peele before. We knew he could write scary stories, but who knew he could also write good science fiction? It’s a big deal that he can make what looks like a big-budget science fiction movie while still putting the story’s importance first.
The movie’s only flaw is the way it moves. There are times when Nope seems to move too slowly, and some scenes go on for too long. If the movie had been tightened up a bit more, it could have been done in less than 2 hours instead of 2 hours and 11 minutes. It would have moved faster and been just as fun to watch, if not more so.
Still, Nope is another great piece of work from Peele. As a director, he’s spread his wings a bit by making a science fiction movie. He still managed to include his trademark social commentary, the thrills we’ve come to expect from his movies, and a new way to look at the story of an alien invasion.
On Friday, Nope comes out in theaters.
