Eric and Andrew are on vacation with their daughter Wen in a cabin in the woods. Four strange people named Leonard, Redmund, Adriane, and Sabrina show up and say that one of the family members must die to stop the end of the world.
As time goes on, the situation with the hostages changes when Andrew, who had just gotten away, kills Adriane with a gun. Leonard fights with him to try to get the gun back, but a stray bullet kills Wen in the process.
Leonard looks very sad about what happened, so he stops fighting with Andrew. But Wen’s death cannot be a sacrifice because it was an accident. So, one of the two people in the couple has to take the leap.
Eric doesn’t think it’s necessary, and he doesn’t believe that their survival will lead to the end of the world. In fact, Sabrina admits that she can’t go through with the plan now that Wen is dead, so she decides to kill Leonard.
Sabrina helps Eric and Andrew escape, but not before telling them there’s still time to save the world and then shooting herself.
But Andrew says what he thinks: if Wen’s death wasn’t enough to make God stop the end of the world, he doesn’t want to kill anyone else. They agree that neither of them will die, and they’ll just have to see if the four strangers were telling the truth.
The end of the book leaves it unclear if the apocalypse will happen or not.

M. Night Shyamalan had other plans for how the movie Knock At The Cabin should end. During an interview with Digital Spy, he said this without giving away anything about Knock at the Cabin:
He told them that he was “so taken with the setup,” but that he was going to do a different version of the book. I won’t say that the movie is the same as the book. Fans of the book can just read the book, and this is a different artist’s take on it.
