Some parts of the game are similar to Dance Dance Revolution and PaRappa the Rapper, and the way it looks was inspired by Flash games. People say that the game brought people back to Newgrounds, a site that was most popular in the early 2000s.
The main character in the game is Boyfriend, who must win singing and rapping contests against other characters in order to keep seeing his girlfriend, Girlfriend. The goal of the game is to hit notes at the right time and keep your health from running out for the whole song.
The game was first made for the October 2020 Ludum Dare 47 game jam.
The full version, called Friday Night Funkin’: The Full Ass Game, is being made. It was funded on Kickstarter.

Friday Night Funkin’ is a rhythm game where the player controls a character named Boyfriend who has to beat a series of enemies so he can keep going out with his Girlfriend.
The player has to get through several levels, which are called “weeks” and each have three songs. Each week, the player plays against a different opponent, though some games are set up differently by having more than one opponent.
During the game, the opponent will sing a pattern of notes (represented by arrows), which the player must then match by using the arrow keys or the W, A, S, and D keys. Some songs have more complicated patterns, and sometimes one player’s pattern is different from the other’s or they both sing together.
