Back up your fonts first
Let’s do this first and then move on. Something could always go wrong, so it’s always a good idea to have a backup plan. Here’s how to make a copy of your fonts:
- Open Font Book by going to your Applications folder and finding the app there.
- To select all, click All Fonts and then press Command () + A.
- Select File, then Export Fonts from the menu bar.
- Put the file somewhere on your Mac. The desktop is a good place to save files for the time being.
You might have trouble with your fonts if you have two of the same one. Here’s how to deal with it. Click “Edit” in Font Book and look for “Enabled Duplicates.” If there are duplicates, this will find them.
If there are any, you can choose to resolve them automatically or manually. If you choose “Resolve Automatically,” the duplicates will be deleted or turned off. Choose this option. After that, you should check to see if the problem is still there.
Clear the font cache
This problem might be caused by cache files. Here’s how to empty the cache:
Go to Applications > Utilities on your Mac and click on Terminal.
Type the next command and press enter. If asked, type in the admin password for your Mac:
sudo atsutil databases -remove
If the command works, you will see a message that says “Removing……..com.apple.FontRegistry…” Then type in and hit enter this command:
atsutil server -shutdown
This stops the font service, and the next command will start it back up again.
atsutil server -ping
Now restart your Mac and see if the problem is still there.
If the problem keeps happening, try restarting your Mac in Safe Mode. In Safe Mode, you may be able to check different system settings and clear caches.
This can also fix the problem with the font. Follow the steps in our article to start your Mac in Safe Mode. Then, open a program in Safe Mode and check to see if the font characters look right.
After that test, get out of Safe Mode by restarting your Mac as usual, and try again.
