How to use Runic Attacks in God of War Ragnarok: When God of War Ragnarok’s Runic Attacks do massive bursts of damage, Kratos’ weapons are at their most powerful. With the Leviathan Axe and Blades of Chaos, you can do two light and two heavy Runic Attacks with each weapon.

In this guide, we’ll show you how to use Runic Attacks in God of War Ragnarok so you can quickly kill both regular enemies and bosses.

To use a Runic Attack, hold L1 (block/parry) and then press either R1 or R2. Here’s how to use Runic Attacks in both their light and heavy forms:

Light Runic Attack (L1 + R1)
Heavy Runic Attack (L1 + R2)

Make sure you have a Runic Attack equipped before you can use one. You don’t have one when you start the game, and you’ll have to play for more than an hour before you can equip your first Runic Attack, Winter’s Bite.

Once you have access to a Runic Attack, you can equip it from the weapons section of the menu (here are all the controls for God of War: Ragnarok). This is the same place where you can change the parts of your weapons.

As mentioned before, each weapon can equip one light Runic Attack and one heavy Runic Attack at a time, but you’ll need to unlock/collect them first.

Each attack has its own effects and a ranking for Harm, Stun, and Frost/Fire for the Leviathan Axe and Blades of Chaos, in both.

Each attack also has a base cooldown, which is shown by a half-filled circle next to the effect stats. After using a Runic Attack, you can see how long it will take to use it again in the bottom left corner of the screen. Over time, a symbol for the attack will slowly fill up. The heavy and light Runic Attacks of each weapon have different cooldowns, so switch between weapons to use them all.

Cooldown (CLD) and Runic are the most important stats for Runic Attacks (RNC). The faster they’ll recharge, the more CLD you have. When you unleash them, they’ll do more damage if your RNC stat is high.

Runic Attacks also get stronger as Kratos earns more XP and spends it on upgrades. So, if you unlock a new Runic Attack, it’s a good idea to equip it and try it out against enemies.

The Runic Attacks in God of War: Ragnarok are some of Kratos’ most powerful weapons, so you should use them often. They’ll start off with very long cooldowns, but as you improve the attacks and Kratos’s stats, you’ll be able to shorten the cooldowns enough to use them regularly.
