The FBI confirmed that a criminal complaint had been filed after Erik Tadeo Ramirez said he had taken $50,000 (£40,000) from the Cartel Del Noreste, which is one of the most dangerous drug cartels in Mexico.

“Witnesses said that Ramirez also bragged that he stole about $50,000 from the Cartel Del Noreste,” an affidavit said.

A kidnapping charge was made against Jonathan Cavriales.

On March 23, Ramirez was at a party in the Las Americas neighborhood of South Laredo. He was overheard on the phone telling a woman that he felt safe in the US.

After Ramirez told the woman where he was, a blue Dodge Ram showed up around 12:45 a.m. the next day.

Three armed men in masks got out of the car and attacked Ramirez, who was then forced into the car.

The Dodge then drove into Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, at about 1:09 a.m. Ramirez has not been seen since.

Reports say that the last time anyone saw Mr. Ramirez was in Loredo, Texas, where he was trying to get out of a moving pickup truck.
