If you want a warm and fuzzy holiday movie, you should look somewhere else. We deserve Violent Night for fighting about whether or not Die Hard is a Christmas movie year after year. This messed-up but holiday-themed movie is a lot like Die Hard, but Santa Claus plays John McClane, a worn-out lawman who is fighting a gang of vicious thieves at a Christmas party that has gone horribly wrong.
In the same vein, Violent Night is about a Santa (Stranger Things’ David Harbour) who kills people. But instead of rosy-cheeked kids, fighting families, or difficult parents, this Santa Claus is only interested in giving some thieves what they deserve for breaking into people’s homes.
It’s not a piece of coal, either. It’s like someone stuck a Christmas ornament through the eye and into the brain. After all, Santa Slasher can kill with holiday weapons like a candy cane that has been sharpened to a point.
In Violent Night, a group of grumpy caterers at the Lightstone family’s annual party all have weapons and seasonal codenames such as Peppermint, Jingle, Krampus, and Scrooge (John Leguizamo as the movie’s Hans Gruber).
They are making plans to steal hundreds of millions of dollars from the family vault. But because this clan is full of grumpy Grinches, it’s hard to care too much about these stakes.

This is a Christmas comedy in the style of the crass classic Scrooged, but with a lot of action and violence. It has a good heart, but there is a lot of bloodshed.
In other words, this R-rated movie is not for kids at all. It starts with Santa getting drunk and yelling at a bar about how bad the world is. Adults might find this funny or understandable, but kids might be upset by Santa’s loss of faith. And if that doesn’t work, his sloppy attempt to boot and rally might!
Aside from that, the red-suited warrior can kill because Santa is fighting bad guys who are threatening not only Christmas cheer but also a cute child.
Screenwriters Pat Casey and Josh Miller put in a lot of bloody violence, like gunshots, arrows, decapitations, war hammer smashes, and explosions that kill people. Plus, jokes often end with flashy curse words, like when the not-so-nice grandma says, “Don’t spit in my mouth and tell me it’s chocolate cake.”
If you usually watch Christmas movies like “Elf,” “A Christmas Story,” or the Rankin/Bass collection, “Violent Night” will make your hair stand up and turn white.
