But first, let’s talk about why you should care in the first place, besides just needing to know if you can run to the liquor store when the drinks start to run out. After all, Labor Day is a day to honor, well, people who work.

You can thank the workers’ movement of the 1800s for this wonderful three-day weekend. It was first celebrated in 1882 to give people a much-needed break and honor the work that workers had done to make our country better.

So, keeping your computer closed until Tuesday is basically your civic duty, right?

Are liquor stores open on Labor Day in West Virginia?

Most liquor stores are closed on Labor Day because it’s the law, and often because the state controls their sales and distribution of alcohol.

But there are many times when this rule is not true. For one thing, if the store in question isn’t run by the government, its owner could decide to keep it open.

Legal Beer says that Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri.

Nebraska, West Virginia, New Mexico, New York, Oklahoma,  New Jersey, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, D.C., and West Virginia do not control the sale and distribution of alcohol.

Still, your best bet is to check with the store near you. In Kansas, for example, the state does not control liquor sales, but Labor Day, Memorial Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and a few other holidays mean that liquor stores are closed.
